Responsibility is in our fabric

The global temperature is rising fast – far too fast – and climate change requires us all to take immediate action. The textile industry is faced with the fact that we are responsible for between 2-8 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, with the majority stemming from fossil-based energy within manufacturing.

This is a challenge that cannot be tackled by any one player in the industry alone. Collaboration is key to achieving a crucial transition to renewable energy sources industry-wide. Working closely with our buyers and customers, we strive to develop sustainable materials with our partners, creating stylish, high-quality products that are built to last. We also prioritize offering traceable and transparent product processes as much as possible.

Together, we can make our Earth a better place. By strongly believing in collaboration, we engage with NGOs and industry experts to share knowledge and expertise, driving our sustainability mission forward. Our employees, the backbone of our brand, are deeply involved in our sustainability initiatives. Similarly, our customers are essential advocates for sustainable fashion, driving demand for responsibly made clothing and enabling us to continue our work towards a more sustainable future.

Products

At New Joys we are on a mission to continually reduce our impact on people and the planet. We’ve mapped out three focal areas for us to work on and will report on progress as we move forward.

Materials

We prioritize sustainable materials like linen, responsibly sourced cellulosic fibers, and certified organic and recycled fibers in our materials mix. We constantly push ourselves to improve and recently updated our definition of responsible fabric to include materials that are 50% or more reduced-impact alternatives. We regularly review our materials mix for areas to enhance and explore new options through research and development.

Supply Chain Traceability

It is crucial for our customers to be informed about the origins of their garments and the materials used in their production. Our factories are proud members of the amphora BSCI, demonstrating adherence to the strict code of conduct required by over 2,300 member companies. Additionally, we offer transaction certificates (TC) for our sustainable materials, providing transparency and traceability for our products.

Slow-fashion Styles

Our commitment is to deliver high-quality, long-lasting styles to our customers. We prioritize quality in every aspect of product development, from fabric selection to garment construction, with the goal of extending the lifespan of each item for future use or resale.

Certifications

We care about the planet and the people and the future as much as our clients.

People

At New Joys everybody counts. We’re passionate about creating an inclusive workplace culture and recognize that people are at the heart of everything we do.

Company Culture

We’re committed to creating an inclusive, vibrant and empowered workforce that’s equipped to navigate and thrive with the growth trajectory of the brand. By investing in the employee experience, fostering collaboration and providing growth opportunities, we’ve built a resilient organization that knows the true strength and importance of its people. It’s a journey – and our team are brought along for the ride.
Our people-first approach is underpinned by the key pillars of our culture: wellbeing, a growth mindset, recognition, engagement and connection. From our head office to our factory, we’re proud of the values led culture we’ve created at New Joys. Our team lives and breathes our core values, no matter what their role is.

Labour standards and Code of Conduct

We have achieved BSCI certification. BSCI, which stands for Business Social Compliance Initiative, is a globally recognized program that implements international labor standards to safeguard workers’ rights. These standards are in line with the International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions and declarations, the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
Our dedication to BSCI’s principles reflects our belief in improving working conditions in supply chains worldwide. Upholding labor rights is a core value for us, and we are committed to fostering a fair and sustainable working environment for all.

Gender Equality & Women’s Empowerment

By ensuring that 70% of our factory workforce is female, we are actively promoting gender equality and empowering women to participate fully in the workforce. We provide equal opportunities for both men and women, ensuring fair wages, benefits, and opportunities for advancement.
We also prioritize creating a safe and inclusive work environment where all employees feel respected and valued. This includes implementing policies and programs to prevent harassment and discrimination, as well as providing training and support for women to develop their skills and advance in their careers.
By championing gender equality in our factory, we are not only fulfilling our commitment to the WEPs but also contributing to a more sustainable and equitable world for all. We believe that by empowering women and promoting diversity and inclusion, we can create a stronger, more resilient workforce and society as a whole.

Planet

As a business, we understand we have an impact on the environment, and acknowledge it is our responsibility to manage our relationship with the natural world, continually looking for ways to reduce impact and increase efficiencies.

Climate impact

The fashion industry is often cited as one of the most impactful sectors in terms of climate and nature, and changing this status will require industry-wide effort, innovation, and collaboration.
An important first step for any fashion brand is measuring its climate impact across its direct emissions (scope 1) and indirect emissions (scope 2 and 3). For fashion, the majority of emissions are generated through scope 3, the manufacturing, distribution, use, and disposal phases.

Ecosystems

Beyond carbon, fashion is also a significant contributor to pollution and ecosystem health decline, including water, soil, and wildlife. We recognize our responsibility to address these issues and acknowledge there are no quick for such complex problems. It is a journey, and here are some of our initial steps.

Next steps

With EcoAct’s expertise, measure our latest carbon footprints, review hotspots, and set our baseline using our baseline measurement, set our science-based reduction targets, shape a bespoke reduction strategy for our direct and indirect operations, striving for continual progress across emissions reduction

Materials mix

Our materials mix favors reduced-impact alternatives to conventional fabrics, such as cotton, viscose,
wool, and synthetics. Organic cotton helps avoid harmful agricultural chemicals including pesticides and fertilisers. Responsible wools are sourced from supply chains certified to uphold the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare and responsible chemical management systems. Synthetics including nylon and polyester are derived from certified recycled sources. We understand recycled synthetics still have an impact and are paying close attention to how and where we use it and any reduced-impact innovations.

Waste

Our waste-reduction journey sits across all our operations and products – from initiatives at head office and in-store to packaging, circular design principles, to useful life extension of products.

Chemicals

Fashion is a chemical-intensive industry, and we are on a mission to ensure responsible chemical management across the supply chains that make our products. Our restricted chemical and responsible management policies ensure the people safe and ensure the local environment is protected from harmful chemical pollution.
